Here is what is making news for January 19, 2026.====================================Residents impacted by flash flooding across the Surf Coast and Colac Otways will receive disaster assistance, with state and federal governments activating support measures.========================================================================Firefighters across the region have been working tirelessly over the past week to mitigate a number of fires across the Colac Otway region.Colac Incident Controller Cameron Leahy says the risk of further outbreaks have been limited but work still remains to fully extinguish the fires.========================================================================Surf Coast Shire Council has closed its emergency relief centre at Stribling Reserve in Lorne.Council staff contacted everyone registered with the centre on Friday afternoon, with all residents either returning home or securing alternative accommodation, allowing the centre to close.========================================================================It's been a massive week for the regions SES and emergency services.SES Colac has attended to fires, trees down, road crashes and flooding on the Great Ocean Road.A crew of volunteers were in Wye River to lend a hand with the start of clean up, tasks of removing debris, and helping campers pack up their camps.Over the weekend Crews Crews were out in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings clearing trees from Barongarook, Yeo , Elliminyt and Colac ========================================================================While there was no loss of life during last week’s flash flooding along the coast, questions are being raised about emergency warnings.Colac Otway Shire Mayor Jason Schram says earlier communication may have reduced damage and limited costly losses to public assets.========================================================================In a Victorian first, police at the Rescue Coordination Centre in Williamstown coordinated five helicopters in the air at once during flash flooding along the Great Ocean Road.Police Air Wing, Ambulance Victoria and Life Saving Victoria aircraft carried out multiple rescues, including winching a man in his 60s from the roof of a shed and rescuing a hiker from a hilltop near the Cumberland River.========================================================================AND IN SPORTThe first split round of Colac South Cricket saw two one-sided results.Stoneyford defeated Irrewarra by 89 runs, while City United cruised past Simpson by 96 runs.City United’s Dylan Slater starred with 122 runs to secure the win.========================================================================It was one from 3 for the regions cricket teams in the Sungold Cup T20 competition.Alvie only made 71 against the Penola Eagles.Pomborneit's 125 was no match for the Northern Raider's 125.While City United got the job done against Pigeon Ponds.========================================================================See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
