East Carolina pulled off exactly what it needed to in Clearwater, Fla., at the AAC baseball tournament, sweeping the week to win the championship and extend its season. The Pirates defeated USF on Tuesday, beat Charlotte in the winner's bracket, then eliminated South Florida to advance to the winner-take-all championship against Tulane. Led by some early offense and a stellar outing from freshman pitcher Sean Jenkins, the Pirates rolled to an 8-2 win in the AAC title game, earning an automatic bid back to the NCAA postseason. ECU will appear in its 35th overall regional, and its seventh straight under head coach Cliff Godwin.
